What do you want to learn?

Flamenco is taught by discipline, and almost no school offers them all: dance schools are the most numerous, singing has few places to learn it properly, and guitar is split between flamenco schools and music schools. Each discipline has its own page, with its schools and what's worth knowing before signing up.

Flamenco schools by district in Barcelona

They're not all where you'd imagine: the Eixample and Gràcia have several, but Nou Barris, Poblenou and Barceloneta do too. Pick your district and you'll find what's close to home or work, which is what decides whether you'll actually go twice a week.

How to choose a flamenco school in Barcelona

Barcelona has 15 schools and academies where you can learn flamenco, and they're more different from one another than they look from outside. Some are run by a well-known artist, some are music schools with a flamenco department, some are municipal civic centres with term-based courses, and some are small studios focused on a single discipline. The first thing is to decide what you want to learn: dance, singing or guitar.

Look at the entry level, not just the name

Almost all have a beginners group, but not all of them open it mid-course. Dance schools usually organise levels in courses from September to June; music schools, through weekly individual classes you can start whenever you like; civic centres, in terms with limited places. On each school's page you'll see the levels it publishes and how it organises the course.

In person, online or both

7 of the 15 schools also offer online classes, almost always individual. It works well for guitar and singing; for dance, most teachers insist that the floor, the mirror and in-person correction can't be replaced. If you live far away or travel a lot, filter by «online» and see how each school handles it.

Ask the school for the price

Each school charges differently depending on weekly hours, age, whether the class is one-to-one or in a group and the time of year, so we don't publish prices: an out-of-date figure would lead you to choose badly. The form on each school's page asks the school directly, and it replies with the price that applies to you.

And the question almost nobody asks: who actually teaches the class?

In flamenco, the teacher matters more than the venue. The school pages note who runs each school and their background, when the school itself shares it, and a first trial class —free at several schools— is the best way to find out whether you click with that person.

Frequently asked questions about flamenco schools in Barcelona

How many flamenco schools are there in Barcelona?

This directory has 15 schools and academies with regular flamenco classes in Barcelona and its area: 10 teach dance, 8 singing and 9 guitar (several offer more than one discipline). We don't count one-day workshops or tourist classes.

How much do flamenco classes cost in Barcelona?

It depends on the format: a weekly one-to-one class, a group for the whole year, a class pack or a term-based course at a civic centre. As it varies from school to school and year to year, we don't publish it: ask the school using the form on its page.

Can I start knowing nothing at all?

Yes. Every school in the directory has a beginners group or class, and several offer a first trial class. What changes is when you can join: in an individual class, whenever you like; in a course group, it's best to join at the start of the term.

Are there online flamenco classes from Barcelona?

7 schools offer online classes alongside in-person ones, mostly for guitar and singing. Use the «online» filter on the listing to see them.

Which districts have flamenco schools?

The schools are spread across 14 districts: Eixample, Gràcia, Nou Barris, Poblenou, Raval, Sants, Barceloneta, Poble-sec and a few more. The listing can be filtered by district, and each school page's map tells you how far it is from Plaça de Catalunya.

Where can you study flamenco officially in Barcelona?

Besides the schools in this directory, the Conservatori del Liceu and the ESMUC offer higher-level qualifications in flamenco guitar and flamenco performance, with an entrance exam. They don't appear as listings because they aren't open academies, but we mention them on the flamenco guitar page.
