How you learn to sing flamenco
A singing class works on the voice —breathing, pitch, placement—, the compás of each palo and the repertoire: the lyrics and melodies of alegrías, tangos, bulerías or soleá, learnt by ear. It's taught in small groups or individual classes, because every voice needs its own correction.
Three ways to learn singing in Granada
The municipal school has singing as part of its September-to-June course, at two levels and with an entrance exam at the start. In the Albaicín there are week-by-week singing courses, with no previous level required, with professional cantaores from the city. And the University of Granada runs a termly beginners singing workshop, open to anyone.
With guitar and with dance
Learning to sing for dance and to come in with the guitar is half of singing. Schools that teach all three disciplines usually bring their students together in joint sessions, and it's worth asking about before signing up.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to know music to learn flamenco singing?
No. Singing is learnt by ear; what helps is listening to a lot of flamenco and practising the compás. None of Granada's beginners courses require musical knowledge.
Do you need to take an exam to join a singing class?
At the municipal school, yes: there's an entrance exam at the start of the course that assesses each applicant's voice. Intensive courses and the University's workshop don't require a previous level.
How much does it cost to learn flamenco singing in Granada?
It varies a lot between an annual course, a week-by-week intensive course and a termly workshop. Ask the school using the form on its page.
