What you learn in a flamenco dance class
A flamenco dance class works on three things at once: compás (the palos, their beats and accents), technique (zapateado, arm and hand movements, turns and posture) and the choreography of a specific palo —tangos, alegrías, soleá, bulerías— built up over the course. Beginners groups usually start with tangos or sevillanas, which have a rhythm that's easy to feel.
Levels and how courses are organised
Most schools in Barcelona organise dance in courses from September to June or July, with one or two weekly classes per group, and open beginners levels in autumn. Some add technique classes you can join at any time, and civic centres run in terms with limited places. If you want to join mid-course, ask: there's almost always a group you can fit into.
Sevillanas, flamenco and escuela bolera
They're not the same thing. Sevillanas is a couple's dance with four fixed coplas, meant for dancing at ferias, and can be learnt in a few weeks; flamenco is a language with dozens of palos and takes years to study. Several schools teach both, so it's worth knowing which one you're after: on the listing, each page says what it offers.
What to bring and how long it takes to dance something
Flamenco shoes with nails, a comfortable skirt or trousers and, for women, a practice skirt to learn how to move it. With one class a week, your first complete dance usually comes by the end of the first course; with two, quite a bit sooner. What makes the difference is practising the compás between classes.
Frequently asked questions
Can I start dancing flamenco as an adult, having never danced before?
Yes, and it's the norm: most beginners groups in Barcelona are adults starting from scratch. Ask for the trial class and join the course's beginners group.
How much do flamenco dance classes cost in Barcelona?
It's charged per year according to weekly classes, per single class, per pack or, at civic centres, per term. Each school has its own rates: ask for them using the form on its page.
What shoes do I need for class?
Flamenco shoes with a heel and nails on the toe and heel. For a first trial class, a low-heeled, hard-soled shoe will usually do, and the school will tell you where to buy proper ones.
Are there online flamenco dance classes?
Few, and almost always as a complement to in-person classes. Filter by «online» on the listing to see which ones.
Are there flamenco dance schools for children in Barcelona?
Some of the schools on the listing have children's groups; the page says so when the school publishes it, and if not, ask through the form.

Many schools teach more than one thing, and some people start with dance and end up on guitar. These are the directory's other pages in Barcelona.
